ESPN's College GameDay made their first visit to Coastal Carolina University for the Chanticleer's college football game against BYU on December 5, 2020. ESPN senior writer Ryan McGee shares why the Myrtle Beach area is called the Grand Strand and why it is “Oh So Grand!”
Martha Hunn, the Associate Vice President of marketing and communication foe CCU spoke about how the Chanticleer's win and the ESPN name affected their online traffic.
"It was a tremendous opportunity for Coastal to have such a widely loved program come to Coastal and be live. The value of that, you can't put a price tag on it, but of course, we try."
Hunn said that every 30 seconds of the College GameDay show had a value of about $51,000 so their three-hour visit to campus adds up to about $18 million dollars in value.
She also said that using the software they use to track media mentions and media value saw a lot of spikes for the CCU name starting Dec.1, which was the day it was announced that they would play BYU.
This spike in traffic for them added up to $167 million dollars in value.
"I believe that Coastal has been a best-kept secret for many and that the secret is out of the box," Hun added."
Thanks ESPN and Ryan McGee! We hope to see you back at the beach real soon. Perhaps at the upcoming Myrtle Beach Bowl later this December.
And, congrats to CCU Chanticleers on their win!
