Dance the Night Away at the ONEFlight Myrtle Beach Classic

Myrtle Beach’s PGA TOUR event set for May 8-11 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (April 22, 2025) —There will be a second winner at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic in May, and that will come at the Classic Shag Dance competition on Friday night (May 9) following play for the 132 golfers at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The shag dance competition is free to Friday ticket holders.

Tickets for the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic are available for purchase at OneFlightMyrtleBeachClassic.com. Active and retired military personnel as well as first responders are welcome to two free tickets to Wednesday’s practice round, and additional tickets (two per day) for Thursday through Sunday at a 25 percent discount.

Seven couples will compete for cash prizes following play at approximately 6 p.m. on the outdoor stage at the Fan Zone, adjacent to the 17th green. Each of the couples will choose a song to showcase their skills and promote the shag, a type of swing dance that has been described as a slower jitterbug. The dance of couples that is proclaimed the “state dance” originated in North Myrtle Beach more than 40 years ago and is celebrated each spring with the National Championship there.

This year’s overall National Championship winners were Claire Huiet and Johnathan Kemp, both age 23, who will be out to win the first prize of $3,000 at the Classic Shag Dance competition. Second place will be worth $1,700, while the third-place winners will split $700. The competition will be judged by a three-person panel of professional shaggers.

Others in the competition include Sam West, who is in his mid-50s and has competed in 40 of the National Championships, beginning when he was 12. His partner will be his sister Sarah Kemp. Another notable is James Parker, age 87, a former national champion in the master’s division. He will be dancing with Renee Scott.

The ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, which is entering its second year, is a dual-field PGA TOUR event sponsored jointly by Visit Myrtle Beach and ONEflight, a private jet company based in Denver.

The initial Classic, won by Chris Gotterup, drew more than 40,000 spectators and made a significant economic impact on the community. It also earned a “Best in Class” award from the PGA TOUR.

The ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic is managed by SPORTFIVE, a global event management company. The local event will again be one of two stops in the Palmetto State for the PGA TOUR in 2025, joining the RBC Heritage in April at Harbour Town Golf Links.
